Sivananda Yoga
Sivananda Yoga is named for it’s Guru, Swami Sivananda. Sivananda was a medical doctor before devoting his life to the living practice of yoga. He authored an incredible number of yogic texts on spirituality and in 1936 founded the Divine Life Society. He is created with continually spreading love and peace through his life’s work.
The Sivananda Yoga organization was started by Vishnudevananda a student of Sivananda. The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center has opened Ashrams worldwide that host many yogic workshops and trainings following the Sivananda lineage. They also offer a life’s path for those looking to take the monastic path and become a ‘Sannyasa‘ through renunciation.
Sivananda’s work focused primarily on the essence of yoga as a form of meditation and follows the Vedantic philosophy of yoga. Asana practice is introduced as a way to settle the body and mind for the ultimate practice of relaxation through meditation. The Sivanada Asana Sequence follows the Chakra system starting with the Crown Chakra and working down to the Root Chakra. There is also a Sivanada Sun Salutation flow which offers a gentle warm up to the legs, hips and arms.
In our Sacred Paths Yoga Teacher Trainings we offer a glimpse of the teachings that have come through Guru Sivananda. Both through his philosophical approach to yoga as a meditative practice and to the beautifully sequenced Sivananda Hatha Yoga Sequence.
